Chikungunya and the Heart

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Neglected tropical diseases are a group of communicable that occur in and subtropical conditions closely related to poverty inadequate sanitation conditions. Among these entities, chikungunya remains one the most widely spread diseases. Although main symptoms febrile syndrome, cardiovascular (CV) involvement has been reported, with short- long-term implications. As part “Neglected Tropical Diseases other Infectious involving Heart” (NET-Heart) Project, aim this review is compile all information available regarding CV disease, help healthcare providers gain knowledge field, contribute improving early diagnosis, treatment, prevention strategies. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> We adhered Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement conducting reporting systematic review. The search was conducted using MEDLINE/PubMed, SciELO, LILACS databases identify any relevant studies or reviews detailing an association between cardiac published from January 1972 May 31, 2020. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Despite its mechanism not being fully understood, described as frequent atypical presentation (54.2%). Myocarditis prevalent complication. Different rhythm disturbances have reported 52% cases, whereas heart failure 15% pericarditis 5%, acute myocardial infarction 2%. Overall estimated mortality 10%, although patients comorbidities, it may increase up 20%. In proper clinical setting, presence fever, polyarthralgia, new-onset arrhythmia suggests virus-related myocarditis. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> cases rarely fatal, infection disease severe manifestations. Timely diagnosis appropriate management necessary improve patient outcomes.
